Did, in fact, Soviet fashion as such exist at all? Was there a unique Leningrad style? The answers to these questions can be found in the book "Couture in the Soviet style." Black and white photographs, a bygone era ... In the Soviet Union of the 60s-70s. already knew the expression “haute couture”, but reality dictated its own conditions. There was a dissonance between the art of model making and the socialist mode of production. Fashion models were chosen very strictly, they were looking for characters, expressive faces. The unique collection of photographs by Evgenia Hartleben-Kurakina is an accurate and vivid evidence of the Leningrad fashion of those years. At the age of 17, “Mr. Chance” brought Evgenia Kurakina to the legendary House of Models on Nevsky Prospekt in Leningrad, which was the beginning of her professional work as a fashion model. Album book Couture auf sowjetisch Soviet couture Couture in the soviet way Hommage an die Leningrader Mannequins Tribute to Leningrad fashion models Homage to Leningrad models (In Russian, German and English), 240 photographs, ________________________ Soviet Couture is the playfully provocative title of Evgenia Hartleben-Kurakina's book, containing both a hidden question and a statement. Even when scrolling through the pages quickly, it is surprising that, it would seem, is already clear from the name: we are talking about fashion! Postures, looks, fabrics, the embodiment of fantasies or completely ordinary things - the means of communication are the same everywhere and always, even in the Soviet Union ... In her book, Evgenia Hartleben-Kurakina takes us to Soviet Leningrad, making a journey with us into the fashion world of the 60s and 70s. This period is practically unknown, especially if we recall the numerous publications about fashion trends in Western countries, which are considered trendsetters. Thanks to Evgenia's initiative, today we can see a rich collection of fashion photographs taken by famous photographers of that time, as well as authentic illustrations and textual materials of Soviet culture. Being the "top model" of her time and a sought-after Leningrad fashion model, Evgenia delicately and entertainingly talks about the joys and problems of the working life of a professional fashion model. Through photographs and stories, the reader is conveyed a passion for a profession that, like the profession of a designer, requires a vocation. Thanks to the fashion model, the design idea takes on a material form. At the same time, the fashion model is a reflection of certain aesthetic standards of the time, a certain lifestyle. And this is a big responsibility! Initially, the French word "mannequin" meant a doll with a movable body with well-defined proportions of the figure, which were considered ideal. Leningrad, being the most "Western" city of the Soviet Union, formed a restrained classical style of clothing - ambitious and spectacular, thus providing more space for the expression of the personality and individuality of the fashion model. This individual space was used by the team of fashion models in which Evgenia worked. Thanks to professional independence and responsibility, as well as easy naturalness, self-confidence and solidarity, they have become an ideal for ordinary people. As a reference for women who will become consumers of the future socialist fashion industry, these fashion models never aspired to "idealization en masse". In this attempt to combine aesthetic aspirations, scarcity and socialist production conditions, photographs have emerged that are filled with fun and trust, radiate intimacy and make a lasting impression on the reader. The enthusiasm for the work of fashion models was duly appreciated in the texts of Evgenia Hartleben-Kurakina and other authors. For us, the door to the past was slightly opened, and we got a unique opportunity to become witnesses of those events about which we know so little. Annette Hofman, fashion designer, professor
