This is the first book dedicated to Russian graphic design. It tells about the history of the emergence of the design profession (in Soviet Russia there was only an artist) and its relationship with the art of the book. The separation of these two areas of activity to different poles is a phenomenon characteristic only of Soviet and post-Soviet culture, although the whole world the book belongs to graphic design. The study of the profession is supported by a rich analysis of Soviet cultural reality, the integral elements of which were such phenomena as polygraphic constructivism and futurism.
