The book is a fundamental study of the phenomenon of Russian artistic emigration of the "first wave". We are talking about artists who started their professional career on the territory of the Russian Empire, but were forced to continue it in other countries: Turkey (Constantinople), the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Belgrade), Czechoslovakia (Prague), Germany (Berlin) and France (Paris). The author considers the art of the Russian emigration as an independent stream of a single domestic artistic tradition, separated from the cultural processes at home due to its non-creative nature - the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. The originality of the book lies in the fact that both streams - both internal Russian and emigre - are presented here as two parts of one cultural phenomenon - Russian art. The circle of names of the masters mentioned in the book is very wide: from the world-famous V. Kandinsky, M. Chagall, X. Soutine, N. Goncharova, M. Larionov to those forgotten in the homeland of Marevna, S. Sharshun, I. Puni, N. Tarkhov ; from retrospectives of the "World of Art" circle A. Benois, K. Somov, stylists B. Grigoriev, A. Yakovlev and Yu. Annenkov to experimenters and modernists P. Chelishchev, V. Baranov-Rossine, A. Pevzner, A. Lansky, S .Polyakov, N. de Stael and others. The book is richly illustrated, provided with extensive appendices and is addressed to both specialists and a wide range of lovers of Russian art of the 20th century.
