More info

The history of glassmaking began with colored glass. Although we are accustomed to believe that the transparency of colorless glass is its most ancient and characteristic feature.
In modern artistic glassmaking, the role of colored glass has again greatly increased. It is in colored glass that over the past fifteen to twenty years, Soviet artists have achieved particularly noticeable success. The mastery of sulfide glass, a new material that brought world fame to Soviet art glass, became the most important creative stimulus.
The nature of colored glass is revealed by artists both in samples of household products, and in decorative ensembles, and in works that become part of architecture.
This album briefly acquaints the reader with the most significant phenomena in the history of Soviet colored glass and with the new works of masters made in colored glass. The material is systematized by glass factories and gives an idea of the historically established creative trends, a kind of "school" of artistic glassmaking.
The content of the album does not claim to be exhaustive due to the abundance of material and the limited size of the publication. Not all the names of the artists are mentioned in the text; the activities of many are reflected in the "Information about the artists" given in the appendices.
