Yakov Katz (1904-1998) - the greatest Jewish historian and sociologist of the 20th century. Born in Hungary, moved to Eretz Israel in 1936. He was a professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Author of many works on the history of the Jews of Europe, the largest of them: "Exclusion and Tolerance", "Jews and Freemasons in Europe", "Emancipation and Assimilation", "Exodus from the Ghetto". Perhaps his most important book is Tradition and Crisis (1958). In it, Katz analyzed the structure, as well as the institutions (social, economic, educational) of traditional Jewish society and the daily life of the Jews of Central Europe at the end of the Middle Ages, identifying the reasons for the changes that occurred in it in modern times. The book is published entirely in Russian for the first time.
