The book by a prominent British Byzantine scholar is devoted to the history of the state, which is known under various names - the Eastern Roman Empire, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire or simply Byzantium - and existed from 395 to 1453 (with a break in 1204-1261, when this territory was under Crusader control until restored by Michael VIII Palaiologos). In 395, the division of the Roman Empire into western and eastern parts took place, and in 1453 Constantinople fell under the onslaught of the Turks, which laid the foundation for the existence of the Ottoman Empire. The chronology of presentation in this clearly structured work is much wider than the chronology of the Byzantine Empire proper. Byzantium is placed in a global chronological and geographical context, and a necessary historical excursion into the period preceding the reign of Constantine I is given. In each of the first eight chapters, both events of political history (including questions of the Church and dogma) and economic, cultural aspects. The ninth chapter summarizes and tells about the Byzantine heritage, about its manifestations both at the regional and at the pan-European level. The publication is supplied with black-and-white illustrations, maps, a chronological table, as well as an extensive bibliography structured by subject matter and a valuable appendix with a story about the neighbors of Byzantium.
