Based on materials published by the members of the Zionist movement themselves. Introduces the reader to the background and development of one of the most controversial and controversial social movements of our time, from the period of the French Revolution to the founding of the State of Israel. The book is detailed and sober, and it is clear that this sobriety was given to the author through long work: it is dedicated to debunking the myths of both Arab and Zionist origin. Despite the fact that the author sympathizes with Zionism, he seeks to understand Zionism not as a purely Jewish phenomenon, but in an international context: Zionism is regarded as although unusual (the Jews did not have their own state, they were in a special, semi-disenfranchised position), but still legal a phenomenon in history - the aggravation of the national self-consciousness of different peoples of Eastern Europe in the second half of the 19th century. Further plots of the book move towards the goal of Zionism, the creation of an independent Jewish state, while the historical characters of the book, as a rule, do not get exactly what they planned - a common thing when a dream comes true. It's a miracle they made it at all. The special merit of the book in today's situation is a detailed study of the roots of the Israeli-Arab conflict dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the history of attempts to resolve it. Walter Laker is a major English historian, his book, published in 1972, is recognized as a classic, but published in Russian for the first time.
