For the first time, the book contains both widely known and half-forgotten works by A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, V. Odoevsky, N. Polevoy, K. Aksakov, A. Timofeev and other authors devoted to the theme of art and the artist. One of the leading in Russian literature, this theme was first stated in principle in the 1920s and 1930s with a romantic apology of art as the highest sphere of spiritual activity, characteristic of that era. Most of the included works are distinguished by the unity of philosophical, aesthetic and social issues. In some of them, an attempt was made to penetrate the secrets of the fate and work of outstanding artists and composers of the past - Canova, Bach, Beethoven. The collection makes it possible to clearly present the development trends of one of the branches of Russian prose of Pushkin's time.
