The book contains for the first time both widely known and half-forgotten works by A. Pushkin, N. Gogol, V. Odoevsky, N. Polevoy, K. Aksakov, A. Timofeev and other authors, dedicated to the topic of art and the artist. One of the leading themes in Russian literature, this theme was first fundamentally stated in the 20s and 30s with a romantic apology for art, characteristic of that era, as the highest sphere of spiritual activity. Most of the included works are distinguished by the unity of philosophical, aesthetic and social issues. Some of them attempt to penetrate into the secrets of the fate and creativity of outstanding artists and composers of the past - Canova, Bach, Beethoven. The collection allows us to clearly present the development trends of one of the branches of Russian prose of Pushkin's era.
