The novel by the outstanding master of literature of socialist realism is dedicated to the heroic deed of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. It tells about several days of fierce fighting, when a handful of brave men fought to the death under continuous bombing and tank attacks of the Nazis. These people of bright characters, different in profession, age, temperament and nationality, in short breaks between battles, talk about the war and its lessons, recall peaceful life with humor and taunts. Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov (1905-1984) is a writer whose work vividly reflected the life of his native people at turning points in history. One of the most significant chapters in the life of the Russian people is associated with the years of the Great Patriotic War. At the beginning of the war, M.A. Sholokhov was drafted into the ranks of the Soviet Army as a reserve commissar, where he became a war correspondent for Pravda and Krasnaya Zvezda. From the first days of the war, he devoted his work to serving the people, who entered into a mortal battle with the Nazis. Therefore, a deeply patriotic theme - the feat of man in the Great Patriotic War - occupied for a long time the main place in the writer's works. During these years, he creates the works "The Fate of a Man" and "They Fought for the Motherland." M.A. Sholokhov himself said about the novel “They Fought for the Motherland”: “In it I want to show our people, our people, the sources of their heroism ... I believe that my duty, the duty of a Russian writer, is to go on hot traces of his people in their gigantic struggle against foreign domination and to create a work of art of the same historical significance as the struggle itself. The writer began work on the novel "They Fought for the Motherland" in 1943, after the end of the Battle of Stalingrad. The text of the novel recreates one of the most tragic moments of the Great Patriotic War - the retreat of the Soviet troops on the Don in the summer of 1942. The novel was conceived as a trilogy, written in separate chapters in 1943-1944, 1949, 1954, 1969, but never was finished. M.A. Sholokhov shows the cruelty of the war and the heroism of the Russian people. He believes that a feat is not only someone's brave act, but also the whole hard front-line life. Based on the novel “They Fought for the Motherland”, S. Bondarchuk subsequently directed a film approved by M. Sholokhov himself. Both the novel and the film, without embellishment, show the harsh truth of the war, the enormous price and greatness of the national feat.
