Dear friend! This book is written for you. You and I were born and raised in the same country. Today we are separated by thousands of kilometers and dozens of borders. In the winter of 1954, I had to make an unusual decision. On the scales were three human lives against two human consciences. I don't regret the decision. It could only be one. But further events unfolded differently than I expected. - My family ended up in a concentration camp, and I went to a distant and foreign country. After all this, it seemed to me that there was nothing to hope for and there was no need to write a book about what had happened. Until I remembered that in my fate, as in a drop of water, yours could also be reflected. That you can approach the same intersection at any time. Then this book was written. Maybe it will help to understand the true balance of human values in our world to those who are still trying to stay away. Maybe the bitter truth, which I learned at such a high price, will show you the right path. In your hands is the key to the fate of our people. The freedom and life of all mankind depends on the fate of our people. I believe that you will choose and decide correctly. I believe that in the days of despair that has engulfed millions of people, you will be able to maintain the strength of the volgl and fidelity to the voice of conscience. I know that it is to you that our Motherland will be indebted for the coming liberation. To you, today's citizen of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Author
