The novel tells about the fate of a high-ranking Russian official of progressive convictions, Prince Sergei Yakovlevich Myshetsky (the prototype is Prince Urusov), who in 1904 received a high post in the province - vice-governor of the Uren province (Semipalatinsk region).

The events of the novel take place at the beginning of the 20th century - the time of the reign of the last Russian emperor, the time when "the split of the country into parties, circles and "talking shops" became possible, which led the great empire in 1905 to a state from which society cannot get out and to this day.
