The book of memoirs offered to the reader by Walter Krivitsky (Ginsberg Samuil Gershevich) (1899-1941) `I was an agent of Stalin` is a confession of an illegal resident of Soviet intelligence in Western Europe on the eve of the big war. The memoirs are unusual in that their author, due to his high official position in our intelligence agencies, had the opportunity to look not only behind the scenes of the Kremlin, but also into some hiding places of the OPTU-NKVD. The fate of V. Krivitsky, like his intelligence friend Ignas Reiss, who fled after him from Stalin, is dramatic: he committed suicide (according to an unconfirmed version, he was shot by NKVD agents). The book, published for the first time in the United States more than half a century ago, is of great interest to both specialists and the average reader today. It is beautifully illustrated and provided with a rather broad appendix.
