The first chapters of the epic show St. Petersburg in early 1914, "tormented by sleepless nights, deafening its melancholy with wine, gold, loveless love, tearing and powerlessly sensual sounds of the tango - the death hymn", living "as if in anticipation of a fatal and terrible day" . Sisters Dasha and Katya Bulavina, originally from Samara, are passionate about the decadent poet Bessonov[1]. Katya cheats with him on her husband, lawyer Smokovnikov. The “magnificent blasphemy” of the Futurists and other excesses of the “Silver Age” are painted with satirical colors.
Over time, Ekaterina Dmitrievna falls in love with officer Vadim Roshchin, and Dasha falls in love with Telegin, an engineer at the Baltic Shipyard. The whirlwinds of a world war, two revolutions and a civil war carry the four main characters to different parts of the country. Their paths often cross and diverge again. Roshchin joins the Volunteer Army, and Telegin joins the Red Army. At the end of the war, all four meet in the capital of Soviet Russia, where, in the presence of Lenin and Stalin, they enthusiastically listen to Krzhizhanovsky's historic report on the GOELRO plan.
