A huge alien ship is approaching Earth. Nobody knows what to expect from such a visit. The US President is trying to reassure the people and calls for them to refrain from attacks on alien ships. It becomes clear that the aliens' intentions are not at all peaceful. They begin to destroy the main cities of the world. New York, Washington, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Moscow, Beijing, Tokyo and other cities are burning in waves of hot plasma. US Air Force fighters attempt to attack the alien ships, but a protective force field renders them invulnerable, and the aliens destroy most of the Earth's air force. Only one pilot, Stephen Hiller, manages to shoot down the enemy ship, luring it into the Grand Canyon and forcing it to crash into the rocks. The ejected Steven brings the surviving alien to the US Air Force base in Area 51. From the telepathic alien, people learn that the aliens’ goal is to clear the Earth of people, pump all resources out of the planet and fly to the next one to do the same to it.
