Gustaw Herling-Grudzinski (Polish: Gustaw Herling-Grudzinski, May 20, 1919 - July 4, 2000) was a Polish writer and journalist. in October 1939, together with friends, he created the underground organization Polish People's Independence Action (PLAN). As a courier of the organization, he went to Lvov, then to Grodno, but was arrested there in March 1940 by the NKVD, accused of espionage. He sat in transit prisons in Vitebsk, Leningrad, Vologda, sent to a camp in Ertsevo (Arkhangelsk region). He stayed there for 2 years, was released in 1942 under the Soviet-Polish agreement of Sikorsky-Maisky. Joined the army of General Anders, fought near Monte Cassino. He was awarded the highest badge of military distinction of Poland, the Order of Virtuti Militari.
Notes about the Soviet camp "Another World" (Another World), which are most often compared with the Kolyma stories of V. Shalamov, are his main book.
