Confirmation of this is the fate of the heroes of Galina Shcherbakova’s dilogy “Provincials in Moscow,” the author of the legendary Soviet-era super-megabestseller “You Never Even Dreamed of.” Galina Shcherbakova wrote the story of those who passionately, as only Russians from the hinterlands can, rushed to Moscow, and then received beatings, gifts, recognition or expulsion from the capital. In some ways, this is the fate of the author herself and her generation, whose search for happiness was sometimes so naive and imprudent. As always in Shcherbakova’s novels, there is a lot of love in “Provincials,” because without it we are worth nothing, the author believes.
