In the civilized world of educated people, ritual cannibalism flourishes. The easiest way is to be an amoeba: they are immortal, elastic and shapeless. Being an individual is terribly difficult.

Marian is pathologically normal, and life does not promise her surprises. It is so easy to agree to a scenario that has been tested more than once by millions of people, but it turns out that the normality of life and the absorption of all Marians by everyone is unbearable.

She threatens to disappear into family life, which means that her future husband is the same cannibal. A girl's delicate body refuses to digest such norms - literally.

This is the first novel by Booker Prize winner Margaret Atwood (b. 1939), “The Edible Woman,” which foreshadowed the massive feminist movement.
