The novel "Malville" is traditionally classified as a genre of realistic fiction. The heroes of the novel are the author’s contemporaries. The inhabitants of Maleville Castle and the surrounding lands, who miraculously survived a thermonuclear explosion, find themselves thrown back into an era of feudal fragmentation and, in order to survive, create an agricultural commune - the Maleville Brotherhood.

The novel was conceived by the author as a warning to future generations. However, the tragedy of the situation is just a decoration for a fascinating plot, rich in literary and historical allusions and erotic scenes of a patriarchal idyll. The novel is deeply optimistic, and Merle believes in the all-conquering power of the human spirit and mind.
