In Cape Town, South Africa, an old professor dies of cancer. Ms. Kerren, who fought against lies and atrocities all her life, but is actually isolated from the real horrors of the apartheid regime, now has to force herself to come to terms with the untruth that reigns around.

In a long letter to her daughter, who fled to America a long time ago, the heroine lists the strange events of recent days. She writes about a fire in a "black" town next door and discovers the gunshot body of the son of a local employee: a teenage activist hiding in her house is killed by security forces.

In a moment of despair, the only person with whom she can share her pain and anger is a homeless alcoholic who unexpectedly appears on the threshold of her house.
