The book is devoted to the history of the formation of the canon of the New Testament. This is a study of the long process of weeding out dozens of gospels, epistles and other books that had local or temporary recognition in various parts of Christendom. A separate part of the book is devoted to theological aspects of the formation of the canon.

The American professor Bruce Metzger raises other questions, such as which version of the text should be considered canonical, whether the formation of the canon is complete, whether the canon should be sought within the canon itself, and whether the canon is a collection of authoritative books or an authoritative collection of books`.
