The collection was compiled from essays by Russian writers of the 40s of the 19th century and published in 1845 in two parts by N. Nekrasov and V. Belinsky. The book was a manifesto of the realistic trend in Russian literature, which arose under the name of the “natural school.”

The publication reflected the theoretical principles of realism (articles by Belinsky) and contained their concrete embodiment (essays and stories by Grigorovich, I. Panaev, N. Nekrasov , V. Dahl). The main goal of the collection is to draw the attention of readers to the situation of the democratic strata of society, whose representatives were the “characters” of the essays, and to promote the development of public consciousness.
