In the historical novel by A. N. Tolstoy (1883-1945) Peter the Great, one of the turning points in the history of Russia is shown, when, according to the author, the 'Russian character' was developing. The first book of the novel is dedicated to the struggle of Peter and his supporters with the traditions of old Muscovite Rus'. The second tells how the new Russian state grows stronger in wars with external enemies. The third, unfinished book tells about the victories of Russia and the Northern War. Skillfully using the language of the time of Peter the Great, A. N. Tolstoy recreates the image of the protagonist and the spirit of the era.
