The narrative covers several decades of the life of the Cossack village and is built around the Yesaulov family, so the book can be called a Cossack saga. The author in the preface writes that the novel was born from numerous stories he heard from relatives and friends, because he himself grew up in a Cossack village. That is probably why he managed to describe the life and traditions of the Terek Cossacks so colorfully, to show how the Cossacks breathed, what values ​​they professed, to enable the reader to "listen" to live speech. Ancient Cossack songs are organically woven into the narrative, which gives the work a special flavor.

Heroes are alive, voluminous. The three Yesaulov brothers, seemingly relatives, were brought up in the same family, and at the same time completely different, living with different ideas, for one it is enrichment, for the other it is loyalty to the oath and an all-consuming love for the Fatherland, for the third - the eternal search for a way. During the revolution, the brothers found themselves on opposite sides: the pathological miser Gleb worked only for his own pocket, Spiridon fought for the Whites, Micah for the Reds. Nevertheless, Spiridon and Micah subsequently found the strength to reconcile. However, all the villagers hold on to each other, because the village is the same family, only a very large one. It is on such values ​​that the world of the Cossacks rests, it is they who do not allow it to fall apart even in the most difficult years of famine, revolution and war.
