A poem. In verse translation by Valery Perelishin from the Chinese original.

Valery Pereleshin (herman in monasticism, 1913 - 1992) - Russian poet, translator, journalist, memoirist of the "first wave" of emigration. Qu Yuan (middle name Qu Ping, c. 340-278 BC) is the first known lyric poet in Warring States Chinese history. His image has become one of the symbols of patriotism in Chinese culture. The day of Qu Yuan's ritual suicide (Duan Wu Day in the Eastern calendar) is celebrated as a holiday called the Dragon Boat Festival. As a descendant of an aristocratic family, Qu Yuan served as a minister in the court of the Chu kingdom. He opposed Qin hegemony. According to legend, Qu Yuan was slandered by a rival minister who had a strong influence on the ruler of Chu - Qing-hsiang-wang (298-263). Due to his uncompromising nature, Qu Yuan was expelled from the capital, after which he devoted himself to collecting folk legends. In 278 BC e. the capital of Chu was captured by the Qin warlord Bai Qi. Upon learning of this, Qu Yuan created the "Lament for the Capital of Ying" and committed suicide by throwing himself into the waters of the Milo River, modern. prov. Hunan. Qu Yuan is the first Chinese poet whose existence is enshrined in written tradition. He is credited with creating the style of Sao, after the title of the poem "Li Sao". This style differs from the four-syllable verse *Book of Songs* (Shi Jing) by the introduction of variable length lines, which gives the verse a rhythmic variety. Since the time of the Han Empire, the ownership of a number of works by Qu Yuan has been questioned. In the *Historical Notes* of Sima Qian, he is credited with the authorship of five works, among which the most famous are *Questions to Heaven*, *Lament for the Ying Capital* and *Li Sao* (Sorrow of the Excommunicated). According to Wang Yi, Qu Yuan can own up to 25 works, most of which are preserved in the Chu Stanzas anthology.
