Alexander Isayevich Solzhenitsyn is a Russian writer, publicist, Nobel Prize in Literature (1970). The story "The Cancer Ward", presented in this edition, was conceived by Solzhenitsyn in the summer of 1954 in Tashkent, where, after the camp, he was treated in an oncological dispensary. Written in 1963-1967. The decision of the Novy Mir magazine to publish the story met with a firm ban from the authorities. The Cancer Ward circulated in Samizdat, and in 1968 was published in Russian abroad. It has been translated into almost all European and a number of Asian languages. It was first published at home in 1990. The heroes of the story are patients with a “cancer corps” in a Central Asian city in the middle of the 20th century. Among them are people from all over the vast country, from all social strata, including exiles. Fight against disease. Attempts to comprehend life and death. The social situation after the death of Stalin, when the country seemed to have begun to regain consciousness after a terrible illness. The heroes of the story, inhabiting one hospital ward, embody the pain and hopes of Russia.
