‎Translation from French lecture by V.S. Solovyov in Paris in 1888. 32 p.

In the spring of 1888, Solovyov arrived in Paris with the aim of publishing in French an extensive work "La Russie et l'Eglise universelle" ("Russia and the Universal Church"). Deciding to acquaint the public with the main ideas of this work, he read a report in the salon of Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein, which was soon published in the form of a pamphlet called "L'idée russe".

In the brochure, Solovyov continues to develop the ideas of church unification, briefly referring to those formulated in the works of the late 1870s - early 80s. (“Readings on Godmanhood”, “The Great Dispute and Christian Politics”, a series of journalistic articles “The National Question in Russia”, etc.) theological and socio-political principles. The unification of the Churches seems to him a necessary preparatory stage for the transformation of "the great human unity into the universal body of God-manhood." This unification, according to Solovyov, is hindered by the national egoism of the Russian people, which must be overcome "for the sake of universal truth" (as has already happened twice in history: under St. Vladimir and Peter the Great). In addition, it is necessary to achieve the independence of the Orthodox Church from the state, which, in turn, will provide guarantees of religious freedom and an unbiased theological dialogue between churches (in his criticism of the synodal government of the Church, he completely follows I.S. Aksakov).

Soloviev's pamphlet, although it was not allowed to be sold in Russia, caused a lot of responses in the domestic press, mostly negative or sharply critical. Particular dissatisfaction was expressed with the proposed project of the Universal Church, which implies the existence of a “common, or international, priesthood, centralized and united in the person of ... the Supreme High Priest,” to whom some of the powers of the secular governments of nation-states should be transferred. The third component of the Universal Church was to be the prophets - "freely raised up by the Spirit of God to enlighten the peoples and their rulers and constantly pointing them to the perfect ideal of human society." In "the consonant and harmonious action of these factors" Solovyov believed the first true condition of human progress, or the movement of mankind towards God-manhood. In his own project, Solovyov hoped to "restore the image of the Divine Trinity on earth" and believed that it was precisely in such a restoration that the true "Russian idea" consisted. Solovyov's pamphlet was first translated into Russian by G. Rachinsky in 1909 and appeared in the journal Questions of Philosophy and Psychology, Vol. 100 (V), and in 1911 it was published in the same translation as a separate edition in the publishing house Put. Reissues: Soch., v. 2. M., 1989 (series “From the history of Russian philosophical thought”); Russian idea. M., 1992, p. 185–205; Solovyov Vladimir. On Christian Unity. M., 1994, p. 161–79.
