The book introduces the views of the outstanding English moral thinker and historian Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), presented in his most important works "Heroes, Hero Worship and the Heroic in History" and "Past and Present", as well as in the collection of aphorisms " Ethics of life" (“Work hard and don’t lose heart!”). All these works have not been republished in our country for many decades and have now become a bibliographic rarity. They contain paradoxical in content and vivid in form the author’s reflections on the eternal problems of human existence (the meaning of life and the value of the individual, death and immortality, faith and unbelief), as well as on problems that are of particular relevance today (labor and acquisition, unbridled enrichment and impoverishment, democracy and true freedom, etc.) Compilation, preparation of the text and notes by R.K.
