Two plays by Kobo Abe (1924-1993), one of the leaders of the Japanese post-war avant-garde, reveal the phenomenon of individual and collective madness. The author of the famous novels The Woman in the Sands and Alien Face, filmed by no less significant director Hiroshi Teshigahara, dissects with an absurdist scalpel such iconic phenomena of our time as capitalism (Ghosts Among Us, 1958) and militarism (The Fortress, 1962) . The madness of the main characters here collides with the mercantile bourgeois environment, trying to find a use for strange skills, or at least clear their way after eliminating madness along with its carrier.
