From the preface: “We, who have seen and lived through this terrible era, cannot be judges. The events we witnessed are still too close. At the same time, the years of the greatest flowering of Russian culture have passed before our eyes. We felt its beauty and grandeur with our whole being. That is why, it seems to me, we have a duty to pass on to the coming generation the images and spirit of our native culture, a life-giving source that he did not have to touch.”
