The first volume of the Collected Works of Dimitar Dimov, an outstanding Bulgarian writer and winner of the Dimitrov Prize, includes two novels. The novel Lieutenant Benz, set at the end of World War I, exposes the policy of monarchist Bulgaria and shows the catastrophic state of the country. The socio-psychological novel "Condemned Souls" recreates the heroic and tragic events of the period of the Spanish Civil War, against which the love story of a Spanish Jesuit monk and a young Englishwoman develops. The novel "Tobacco" (second and third volumes), repeatedly published in Russian, entered the golden fund of modern Bulgarian prose. Deeply social epic work presents a panorama of social life in Bulgaria for fifteen years - from the beginning of the 30s to the end of the Second World War. Depicting with great skill the fate of people connected in one way or another with the Nicotiana tobacco company, the author reveals the inexorable process of degradation of bourgeois society, shows the historical inevitability of the death of the bourgeoisie, the growth of revolutionary forces in the country. The fourth volume of the Collected Works includes plays, stories, travel essays, journalistic articles and speeches. The plays "Women with a Past" and "Guilty" are dedicated to our days and talk about the moral responsibility of each person for their actions; drama "Respite in Arco Iris" highlights one of the tragic pages of the last stage of the civil war in Spain. D. Dimov's stories are notable for their subtle psychologism and entertaining plot ("Sevastopol, 1913", "A stuffy night in Seville", "Carnival", "Devastated Spain", "Anatomy Da Costa" and "July winter"). In travel essays, the author introduces us to Spain and Latin America. Publicistic works characterize the writer's participation in contemporary public life, showing at the same time the most significant achievements of modern Bulgarian literature.
