Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was an American writer and public figure. Born in the family of a bankrupt small businessman - a German immigrant. In 1889-1890. studied at the University of Bloomington. In 1892 he got a job as a reporter for the Chicago Daily Globe, from that moment his literary activity began. In 1897, his first stories and essays appeared in magazines. In 1900, the first novel "Sister Kerry" was published - the story of a girl from a working-class family who became a famous actress. The book was a resounding success. In 1911, the novel "Jenny Gerhardt" was published, which also reflects the fate of a girl from the people. In the next few years, the "Trilogy of Desire" comes out - a cycle consisting of three novels by the author: "The Financier" (1912), "Titan" (1914) and "Stoic" (published in 1947). In a monumental work, the typical features of an American who achieves success at any cost were reproduced. In 1915, the novel "Genius" was published, dedicated to the tragic fate of the artist. Dreiser was among the few Western writers who supported the October Revolution in Russia and opposed the White Guard movement and intervention. In 1928, the book "Dreiser looks at Russia" was published, written by the author after

Trips to the USSR at the invitation of the Soviet government. In 1925, the novel "An American Tragedy" was published, where the writer depicted the path of the moral fall of the protagonist, blaming American society for this. The novel became a model of realism in US literature in the 1920s. In the summer of 1945, shortly before his death, Dreiser joined the US Communist Party.
