The Past is a multi-volume historical almanac, which in 1986-1999 was published first in Paris by the Atheneum publishing house, and then in Moscow and St. Petersburg by the Phoenix publishing house.

The almanac was actually a continuation of the samizdat historical collection “Memory”. Its main topic was political repression in the USSR. The almanac also published various materials about literature, art, culture, science - articles, documents, letters, memoirs of writers, artists, scientists, and religious figures. The first issue of the almanac said: “The Almanac “The Past” defines itself as historical. It appears at a time when interest in the Russian past has become widespread, and the search for historical truth is felt not only as a matter for professionals, but as a task for the entire society... The Almanac does not limit itself only to the post-revolutionary period of Russian history and events within the country. We are equally interested in Russia’s connections with other countries, the participation and contribution of compatriots in Western science, the life of Russian settlements, the history of individual families and emigrant organizations, the fate of Russian culture abroad... But the leading topic remains, of course, the modern history of the country.”

The almanac included carefully annotated publications of documents from state and family archives. The editors of the almanac were V.E. Alloy and A.I. Dobkin.

Volumes 1-12 of the almanac were prepared in Leningrad and Moscow, and published in Paris in 1986-90, and reprinted in Moscow in 1990-92. Volumes 13-25 were published first in Moscow, and since 1993 - in St. Petersburg. The last, 25th volume of the almanac contains a comprehensive name index and other reference materials.
