Pyotr Fomin was born on December 19, 1866 (hereinafter the dates are given according to the old style) in the family of a priest in the village of Stary Merchik, Valkovsky district. From 1887 to 1891 he studied at the Kyiv Theological Academy, from which he graduated with a master's degree. He served as a teacher of the law in the Sumy real school, and from August 1, 1892, he was appointed in the same school as a priest of the house Alexander Nevsky Church. Since 1896, he has served as a teacher of the law at the 3rd Kharkov Men's Gymnasium, as well as a priest of its Three Hierarchs House Church. A year later, he was also appointed a teacher of the law at the 2nd Kharkov Women's Gymnasium. In the early 1900s, he became a priest of the Church of the Transfiguration, and in 1912 he was appointed rector of the Cathedral of the Annunciation.

In 1908, he was consecrated to the rank of archpriest, and from 1912 he was chairman of the Diocesan Church and Archaeological Society. In addition, for ten years he was a member of the temporary construction committee for the construction of the Three Hierarchs Church of the Kharkiv metochion of the Kuryazhsky Transfiguration Monastery (popularly - Golbergovskaya, by the name of the builder of the temple) ...

P. G. Fomin considered the study of church antiquities of Sloboda Ukraine to be one of the most important directions in his activity. In particular, his articles about the villages of Kaplunovka (Bogodukhovsky district) and Bezdrik (Sumsky district), “Cultural and historical monument of modern church architecture: the Annunciation Church”, “Church antiquities of the Kharkov region: historical and archaeological essay”, report at the consecration of the Kharkov diocesan Church Archaeological Society and the Museum of Church Antiquities attached to it, and others.

The activity of P. G. Fomin on the study of monuments on the territory of Slobozhanshchina continued in the Soviet era, but we are not aware of publications of this time. Since 1920, he was in the service of the provincial committee for the protection of monuments of art and antiquity. In February 1938, Archpriest Fomin was arrested, and on May 26 of the same year he was shot. Rehabilitated in 1958
