More info

The series opens with a fundamental study on the relationship between Russia and Byzantium, as well as the countries of Western Europe and Rome at the end of the 12th - beginning of the 13th centuries. The key event of this era was the fall of Constantinople, the Second Rome, captured by the crusaders in April 1204. The unprecedented catastrophe of the Byzantine Empire caused significant changes in the alignment of the main political forces in the international arena, led to a break in traditional foreign policy and cultural ties. Much attention in the book is given to Galicia-Volyn Rus. The main character was the Galician-Volyn prince Roman Mstislavich. Based on a deep study of archival and other sources, the author approaches some issues traditionally discussed in historical literature from a new point of view, and also raises a number of new issues that have not yet become the subject of historians' study. The book is intended not only for specialists, but also for a wide range of readers interested in national history.
