The bibliographic index “Reference Books on the History of Pre-Revolutionary Russia”, published in 1971, received a positive assessment from wide circles of the scientific community and from the very first days of publication it became a necessary guide for all those involved in history. Due to this circumstance, the second edition of the bibliographic manual has been prepared. As in the first edition, the reference books included in the index can be divided into a number of groups. The first of them includes reference publications in the literal sense of the word: encyclopedic and biographical dictionaries, universal calendars, etc. Adjacent to them are various kinds of statistical collections, prepared, as a rule, by the Central Statistical Committee and reporting data on population, urban growth, the state of agriculture, industry, etc. The second group of reference publications consists of interdepartmental and departmental reference publications: all-Russian and local address calendars, departmental and provincial memorial books, lists of ranks of various departments, military schedules, etc. The third group includes anniversary publications , for reference purposes, for example, on the history of the Government Senate, individual ministries, higher and secondary educational institutions. Finally, this publication continues to include research works (monographs and articles) containing reference materials in appendices (lists of officials, information on administrative divisions, statistical data, etc.). This publication annotates and systematizes reference materials on the history of Russia from the 15th century. before the February Revolution of 1917. The included materials refer to the entire territory of the Russian Empire, with the exception of Finland, the Kingdom of Poland, and the Kara region. Compared to the first edition, a larger number of reference materials from collections and periodicals were taken into account, for a total of 5371 entries for the 18th century. - 1977. Along with reference books in Russian, the index includes some reference books published in the languages of other peoples of the USSR, as well as a number of reference books published abroad both in Russian and in foreign languages and overlapping in content or supplementing similar domestic reference books in Russian language.
