The action of the novel "The Defiler of the Ashes" from the "Yoknapatof cycle" takes place in the fictional district of Yoknapatof, which, however, embodied all the real features and problems of the American South. Lucas Beecham, a black farmer, is wrongly accused of killing a white man. It seems that his fate is sealed: a lynching awaits ahead. But suddenly Chick Mallison bursts into his life, a white boy whom Lucas saved a few years ago, pulling out from under the ice. In order to solve the crime and achieve justice, he is even ready to dig a grave in which the victim is buried and become a defiler of the ashes.
