The index is the first experience in Russian source studies of creating a reference work on the extensive (over 4000 numbers) “autobiographical collection” of S. A. Vengerov.

It provides a single alphabet of names, a list of storage units (cases) of the three components of the collection, provides fairly specific information about each of these units separately, provides systematized and refined information about the composition and architectonics of the collection as a whole.

The proposed publication will help document the most diverse research on the Russian intelligentsia (mainly the 2nd half of the 19th and early 20th centuries) in all the diversity of its artistic and scientific creativity. In addition, recording within the annotations the main bio-bibliographic data about the characters of the “many-faced” collection, it also acquires wide interest as preparatory materials for a universal biographical dictionary - more “hospitable” than already existing publications to ordinary representatives of Russian culture.

The index can be useful to historians of science, literature, art, social thought, bibliophiles, local historians, university teachers, graduate students, students, and all inquisitive readers.
