Poet, translator, theater critic, literary critic, grandson of the philosopher and literary critic Yu.I. Eichenwald (1872-1928). Poems began to write in 1944, was a member of the literary association at the publishing house "Young Guard". In 1949 he was arrested (on a denunciation), exiled for 10 years to Kazakhstan. In 1951 he was again arrested - this time on a fabricated case of the "Union of Struggle for the Revolution". In the dungeon, he imitated a mental illness and until 1955 was in a prison psychiatric hospital. Rehabilitated in 1955.
After returning to Moscow, he graduated from the Pedagogical Institute. Herzen, taught literature at school for more than 10 years. He published poems, translations, articles in newspapers and magazines. Since 1968 he worked as a theater and literary critic, translated plays by foreign authors for the theater, his poems were published abroad, distributed in samizdat. J. Aikhenwald himself considered his main works: a book of poems and prose "On the Sharp Edge" (1972, published in Munich), books about the actors of the Maly Theater "Ostuzhev" (1977) and "A.I. Sumbatov-Yuzhin" (1987) , a book of poems and prose "Leap Year" (1979, published in Munich), a historical study "Don Quixote on Russian soil" (in 2 volumes, 1982-1984, published in New York). During the years of perestroika, he worked in the "Memorial" society.
Yu.A. Aikhenwald passed away on June 28, 1993, was buried in the near Moscow suburbs at the Domodedovo cemetery
