He graduated from the Department of Art History of the Faculty of History of Moscow State University in 1970. He worked as a guide in Solovki and Muranovo. In 1975 he wrote an open letter in connection with the 2nd anniversary of Solzhenitsyn's expulsion. Emigrated in 1982. Lived in Paris, then in Munich. He worked at the radio station "Freedom". In 1991 he returned to Russia. Lives in Moscow, head of the poetry department of the Novy Mir magazine.

Laureate of the Solzhenitsyn Prize in 2003

From the mid-60s. participated in the SMOG group, but as a poet he really developed already in the post-Smog period.
