Dmitry Sergeevich Likhachev is an outstanding scientist of the twentieth century, philologist, art critic, and publicist. His creative heritage is extremely extensive and varied; his monographs, articles and notes dealt with various issues of cultural history. But first of all, the name of D. S. Likhachev is associated with ancient Russian literature, to the study of which he made a huge contribution, and was its tireless propagandist. The book "Man in the literature of Ancient Rus'" was first published in 1958 and has been reprinted several times since then. This work, translated into foreign languages, is rightfully considered one of the fundamental studies on ancient Russian writing. The person in the literature of Ancient Rus', about whom D. S. Likhachev reflects, is both an author and a hero. Putting forward an innovative theory of cultural and historical styles in medieval literature, the scientist shows the specificity of artistic vision and methods of depicting a person in the context of the philosophical, ethical and aesthetic thought of the era.
