The Book of Vayikra (Hebrew ויקרא - “And called”, in the Russian tradition “Leviticus”) is the third of the five books of the written Torah, received by Moshe Rabbeinu - the prophet Moses from G-d and handed over to the Jewish people. The title of the book Vayikra, like the other books of the Torah, corresponds to the first words that open the book.
The Book of Vayikra mainly describes the order and laws related to the offering of sacrifices, the ministry of kohanim and Levites, as well as laws regarding the holiness of the Jewish people.
Many commentators call the book "Vayikra" based on its contents "Torat koanim" - "Torah of Kohanim".
The laws of sacrifice given in the book of Vayikra are called upon to sanctify the Gd-chosen people, distance them from idolatry, and give spiritual meaning to sacrifices.
The Book of Vayikra tells about the types of sacrifices - the burnt offering, the peace offering, the sin offering, as well as public sacrifices.
