Description
The novel "Petersburg Slums" was written and published by Vsevolod Krestovsky in 1864-67 and immediately became famous. According to one of Krestovsky's contemporaries (F. Berg), "Despite everything that was written against this work, the novel "Petersburg Slums" should be recognized as outstanding in its social and artistic significance ..." The chapters of the novel are sketchy in nature - description rooming houses, dens, prison cells and brothels, on the one hand, and luxurious houses of aristocrats and orgies of rich "life-seekers" - on the other, are linked by intricately intersecting plot lines. When the work had just begun to be published, its readers, according to the same F. Berg, "... made up groups and visited the places described by Vsevolod Vladimirovich."
"Petersburg slums" is a powerful novel, which with good reason can be called "Gangster Petersburg of the 19th century", with a "tightly twisted" and unexpectedly modern plot. It is no coincidence that the masters of television series turned to this work. Our best actors embodied the characters of the novel in the film "Petersburg Secrets".
