In the story about the life of the artist Vasily Andreevich Tropinin, the author talks about the difficult fate of the talented Russian artist. V.A. Tropinin (1776 - 1857) lived during the harsh years of serfdom in Russia. He was a serf of Count Morkovi and unquestioningly carried out the whims of his master. “Vasily Andreevich is busy from morning to night. He supervises the construction of the church in Kukavka, paints images and banners, but he also has to paint carriages, fix wells, teach drawing to the count’s children and... appear for dinner in white gloves as a senior footman...” The count was proud of his talented servant, but free didn't give it to him. V.A. Tropinin lived a hard life, but the artist’s talent was looking for a way out, and he drew with inspiration. He created wonderful portraits of ordinary people - workers. At the end of his life, when after a serious illness he finally received his freedom, he painted portraits of Pushkin, Bryullov and others.
