The Honored Worker of Science of the RSFSR, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor A. T. Busygin from 1966 to 1984 headed the Department of Orthopedic Dentistry at the Smolensk Medical Institute.

In 1953, A. T. Busygin defended his Ph.D. thesis "Age features of the structure of the ascending branch of the lower jaw." In the monograph of the same name (1961) and in the monograph "The structure of the jaw bones" (1962), A. T. Busygin outlined fundamentally new ideas about age-related features in the normal structure of the jaw bones. Studying the morphological characteristics of the periodontium in the area of ​​the traumatic node (1958), A. T. Busygin found that in periodontal disease not complicated by a traumatic node, the amount of compact jaw substance increases in relation to the spongy substance, while the amount of inorganic substances decreases. In the case of periodontal disease complicated by a traumatic knot, the greatest loss of inorganic matter occurs in the bone structures of the jaws.

In 1933, A. T. Busygin defended his doctoral thesis "The structure of the jaw bones in normal and in some pathological conditions." Among the significant works of A. T. Busygin is the monograph “Some relationships between the shape and size of the jaw bones” (1962). Using the X-ray method, microscopy and photo-weight analysis, he establishes the difference between morphological changes in periodontal disease and functional overload that occurs with the loss of chewing teeth.

A. T. Busygin has published more than 80 scientific papers, including 6 monographs, he is the author of the technique for making total preparations of jaw bones to study the structures of the latter at the border of macro-microscopic visibility. Under his leadership, 15 PhD theses were defended. A. T. Busygin was an honorary member of the All-Russian Scientific Society of Dentists.
