The book is an experience of studying one of the aspects of the worldview of a medieval European at the turn of the first and second millennia - the perception of nature and understanding of one's own relationship with the "natural environment". Variants of understanding the word "nature" and its synonyms are considered, the ideas of people of the past about the constituent parts into which the surrounding world breaks up, and the "orbis terrarium" model, which consists of these elements, are reconstructed. Close attention is paid to the analysis of the emotional and aesthetic attitude of a person of the Middle Ages to nature, to the identification of the features of the literary language of Latin literature of the 10th and early 11th centuries. An important place in the study is occupied by those whose views are studied in the first place - learned monks. Herbert of Aurillac, Richer of Reims, Dudon of Saint-Quentin and many other clerical writers of the "Renaissance of the 10th century" stand out among them.
