The most brilliant period in the history of German drawing, when it is possible to identify significant masters and confidently attribute certain sheets to them, opens in the middle of the 15th century with the work of the so-called Master E.S. this period, a century later, is the activity of Hans Holbein the Younger. The extraordinary flowering of drawing at this time can be explained by great changes not only in art, but also in the life of the German people in general. In the 16th and 17th centuries, important events and radical transformations took place throughout Europe, including Germany. The series “Drawings by Old Masters”, published under a contract with the Italian publishing house Fratelli Fabbri (Milan), consists of 14 issues dedicated to the art of drawing in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Flanders and Holland, and covers the work of Western European masters of the 15th-18th centuries. Introductory articles and detailed annotations to the drawings were written by leading experts in this field, employees of museums in Italy, France, the USSR and other countries. Each album contains 38 full-length high-quality color reproductions and 40 black and white drawings of various formats in the appendix.
