Simeon Bekbulatovich (Sain-Bulat bin Bekbulat) remains a largely mysterious figure to this day. The fate of the Astrakhan prince, a descendant of Genghis Khan, who came to Russia at a young age, turned out to be inextricably linked with the history of his new homeland. At different periods of his life he was the Tsar of Kasimov, the Grand Duke of All Rus', the Grand Duke of Tver, and a monk. The reasons for such twists and turns remain largely unclear.

This study brings together all currently known documentary evidence about the life of this person. In addition, an attempt was made to identify objects that could belong to both Simeon himself and his immediate circle. As it turned out, there is very little reliable evidence about the hero’s life. In part, this shortcoming is compensated by the study of the life of his immediate circle and numerous relatives who also lived in Russia - Tatar kings and princes, Circassian princes and Nogai Mirzas. As a result, on the pages of the book a collective image of noble immigrants from the East in the Moscow State of the 16th - early 17th centuries appears. This is done in order to partially fill the numerous gaps in the history of Simeon. New versions are offered about what served as the reasons for certain changes in his life. The appendix contains documents that shed light on the life of the hero of this book, discovered in the archives in recent years. In the 130 years that have passed since the publication of N. V. Lileev’s book, this is the first monographic study dedicated to Simeon Bekbulatovich.

The publication is intended for specialists in the field of Russian history of the 16th - early 17th centuries, teachers, museum workers, students, as well as readers interested in Russian history.
