Panait Istrati, a Romanian writer of Greek origin whose education was limited to four years of primary school, began his literary career in French in 1922 at the age of 38 and within a few years became one of the most popular writers of interwar Europe.

An ardent supporter of the ideas of social justice, he arrived in Moscow in 1927 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the revolution, intending to stay in the USSR and devote his life to working for the “fatherland of all working people.” In early 1929, he left the USSR, completely disillusioned with the Soviet experiment. The trilogy “To another flame: after sixteen months in the USSR” (Vers l’autre flamme: après seize mois dans l’U.R.S.S) published by Istrati included: T. 1. Confession for the vanquished (Panait Istrati); T. 2. Soviets in 1929 (Victor Serge); T. 3. Naked Russia (Boris Suvarin).

In the “Confession...” of Istrati, which is offered to the reader’s attention, written with high emotional intensity, the tragic process of destruction of the author’s secret dream upon contact with communist reality is carefully documented.
