The meaning of many historical names is hidden. Historians have been arguing for centuries about the meaning of the names Kyiv, Moscow, Samara, Ryazan, Smolensk. The author tries to put an end to these disputes by proposing a method (the concept of etymological series) to reveal the semantic and etymological meaning of toponyms. Kyiv, Samara and Cambridge are synonyms, these are cities set on crossings. The modern Russian language developed in the 16th-18th centuries, so most of our own names of an earlier time within its framework cannot be understood without etymological analysis. The book opens up new directions of historical research. It is intended for those who are interested in Russian and world history, historical geography, Russian language, etymology.
